Our Story
Lighthouse Montessori was first dreamed about in 2010 by its founder KK Lightsmith. In 2007, KK started their Montessori journey as an assistant in a Primary Montessori program in Seattle. After their first year in the classroom, they went to Portland, Oregon and completed their AMI teachers training. Upon completion, they returned to Seattle and returned to the same Montessori school as a Lead Teacher.
In 2010, KK began to speak their dream to open their own Montessori program. After many years of hard work and much grit, in January 2012 KK (with the support of their partner Jeremy Lightsmith) opened the doors of Lighthouse Montessori in Ballard. The building we are in formerly housed the Ballard Food Bank! In 2017, KK decided to return to school to gain a Master's degree in Psychology. With this change, the Head of School position was gifted to Cynthia Dahl — the Lead Teacher under whom KK worked as an assistant back in 2007! Small world!
Lighthouse Montessori continues to celebrate each human that enters its doors. With the strong foundation laid by KK and the continued work of the adults working within its walls, Lighthouse will continue to serve children for many more years to come.
